I hope everyone had a successful summer riding season. Summer seems to fly by and now it is October and it seems we are getting all the rain now that we did not get all summer.

In June, the NJPHA mailed out surveys to all NJPHA members on the possibility of a NJPHA Championship Horse Show. I want to thank everyone who took the time to reply. I have gone through all the surveys returned. There were many diverse opinions and some excellent suggestions. The board of the NJPHA will now take the results of the survey, study them and see what we can do going forward. The names of everyone who responded was put in a raffle and two names were selected, one professional member and one non professional member. The winners are Sandy Rose and Rebecca Mann. They both receive a $100 gift certificate from the tack shop of their choice. Now for the results:

77 surveys were returned - 16 from professionals, 32 from juniors, 18 from amateurs, 8 from parents/guardians and 3 with no category checked.

Question #1 was to see if there was interest in a NJPHA Championship. 65 responded affirmatively, 12 responded negatively. Interestingly of the total returned with a yes, 12 wanted the Fall Finale to stay as it is and have a championship also.

Question #2 was about the timing of such a championship. Most respondents were split between Veteran's Day weekend and Columbus Day weekend.

Question #3 concerned location of such a championship. Most popular location chosen was Duncraven with the Horse Park and Centenary College pretty equal in votes but a distant second and third.

Question #4 concerned the format of the championship with the majority choosing a warm up class followed by a championship class. Interestingly, again many respondents chose a format but also wanted the Fall Finale to stay as it is.

Question #5 was regarding awards and types of awards. There were many great suggestions including: Round of the Day, Sportsmanship, trainer of the day, Best turned out to name a few. Prizes suggested included money, gift certificates, flowers, saddle pads, picture frames, leather halters and leads, hooded sweatshirts, rain sheets and scrims to name the most popular.

What I thought was a very interesting suggestion was a clinic day with the judges. Another interesting suggestion was a Friday afternoon/night pizza party with the judges participating and perhaps speaking to what they look for in the various divisions.

I want to thank everyone again for your time and effort to respond. We appreciate your imput. If you want to add anything further or have any additional comments concerning the survey, please feel free to email me at svbsummer@comcast.net.

Also new for 2011, any show that runs NJPHA points in 2011 must be listed in the 2011 NJPHA Competition Calendar. The calendar will be in your local tack stores sometime in November. Or you can contact me at the above web address and I can mail you one.The cost is $15-.

I hope everyone has a successful end to your season or if you have already moved up a division good luck! Remember it is not to early to join the NJPHA for 2011. There are applications that can be downloaded from this website. Also, remember that meetings of the NJPHA are held the first Monday of the month at 7:30PM at the Peter Pank Diner on Route 9 north in Sayreville, NJ. It is very easy to get to being right off rhe parkway. Please join us and get involved. All are welcome!
